Forum to tackle Mojares’ views on Tagalog and local languages

A former lawmaker, an educator, and two student leaders will weigh in on the late National Artist for Literature Dr. Resil Mojares’s advocacy for local languages during the premiere of “Tagalog vs. Local Languages: The National Language Question” on Saturday, October 24, 2016 at 3 p.m.
The screening of Episode 4 of the Dr. Resil Mojares Video Series and the ensuing panel discussion, featuring former House Deputy Speaker Atty. Pablo John Garcia, will be held at Palm Grass The Heritage Hotel.
The episode examines whether promoting Tagalog as the basis of the national language has united communities or contributed to the marginalization of Bisaya and other indigenous languages.
In the featured video, Mojares unpacks the historical tensions surrounding the national language debate and advocates for a unified linguistic landscape that fully respects cultural diversity.
Following the screening, the panel of reactors will reflect on Mojares's views, tackling issues such as language discrimination, Visayan identity, and the role of mother tongues in both the national framework and everyday life.
Joining Atty. Garcia on the panel are Dr. Lovely Ross M. Machica, a faculty member of the Cebu Normal University (CNU) Department of Languages and Literature; Red Spinzer Fernandez, a Grade 12 student from Abellana National School; and Renzo Thomas Alfonso, a Grade 11 student from Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion.
The discussion will explore how Mojares’s legacy can inspire modern efforts to preserve and champion local languages.
